His Excellency has no objection to the substitution of "six" for "three" subject to the following proviso:-

Provided that the said Company shall within 3 months

of the aforesaid date remove the buildings from such areas as the

Manager of the Railway may require and hand over such areas to the Government: and provided further that no portion of the building at

present used as a temporary terminal station shall be removed

without the consent of the manager of the Railway.

The Director of Public Works considers that the least time witnin

which the transfer of the Police Basin to Yaumati could be completed

is two years from the present time. In the meanwhile the Govern-

-ment cannot part with the existing Police Basin nor is His Excel-

-lency prepared to pay rent for it as you suggest. The Government

is, however, willing to surrender within six months of the date of

the preliminary payment in connection with the exchange a strip

of about 60 feet in depth on that portion of the area which faces

Canton Road, subject to satisfactory arrangement being made for

access to the Police Basin over the said strip of land from Canton

Road. The Government is also prepared to grant the Wharf and Go-

-down Company the temporary use of an area having a marine frontage

of 250 feet with an average depth of 60 feet in Kowloon Marine Lot 75 adjoining Kowloon Marine Lot od (Holt's Marf), until such time as the remaining portion of the Police Basin can be handed over.
